Finland ranked among the world's most innovative countries

Finland is ranked in global top 10 in innovation – Global Innovation Index 2018

Finland is ranked 7th in Global Innovation Index 2018. Finland rose one spot from the 2017 ranking.

Finland retained its position among the world's most innovative countries, taking 7th position in this year's Global Innovation Index (GII). 2018 GII ranked 126 countries according to detailed indicators looking at the political environment, education, infrastructure, and business sophistication.

This is 11th edition of GII and was co-published by Cornell University, INSEAD, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO, a UN agency).

Finland excels in Business Environment and Innovation Linkages

In this years GII, Finland ranks in the top 10 in the umbrella categories of Institutions (2nd), Human Capital & Research (4th), Business Sophistication (6th), and Knowledge & Technology Outputs (8th). In Market Sophistication (15th) and Infrastructure (17th) however, Finland still lags behind the top countries.

Looking at the GII indicators more closely, Finland leads the world in Business Environment and came 2nd in Innovation Linkages, which takes into account research collaboration between universities and industry.

Espoo offers the world's most intelligent community

Espoo's innovation community – Espoo Innovation Garden – was selected as the world’s most intelligent community in June 2018 and is the largest startups community in the Nordic countries. Also, Half of the Finnish Stock Exchange value is located in Espoo Innovation Garden.

Startups, scaleups, growth companies and large international corporates, R&D centres and Aalto University all come together in the Espoo Innovation Garden ecosystem. Espoo's strength comes from this collaboration of the different innovators.
