VTT's role in Finnish Innovations

 

1. VTT as an innovation accelerator

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland  Ltd is the leading research and technology company in the Nordic countries. With its competence and proven innovations it is an R&D partner with world-class research infrastructure and a network spanning the globe. VTT is an essential part of Espoo research and innovation campus.

VTT is an innovation catalyst and accelerates the performance of companies and creates well-being for the society. We use 4,000,000 hours of brainpower a year to develop new technological solutions. We have affluent evidence of the impacts of our results on growth, employment and well-being in Finland. VTT is the most important public research partner in Finland for companies.
 

2. VTT in figures

VTT activities are focused on three areas: Knowledge intensive products and services, Smart industry and energy systems, and Solutions for natural resources and environment. In 2014, VTT’s turnover was 277 M€ and staff 2,375. In 2013, VTT had 815 Finnish companies as customers, and 415 from abroad. Approximately 50% of our clients are SME companies.

36% of Finnish innovations contain VTT expertise. The turnover of companies in key export sectors increased on average by 26% after innovations where VTT had a substantial role.

VTT is one of the champions in the first Horizon 2020 funding calls having secured 42 M€ for its projects. With this, VTT is ranked 8th among the 7804 organisations that have been awarded H2020 grant.

 

3. VTT’s research facilities an essential part of the Espoo and European infrastucture 

VTT ensures efficient utilisation of science and technology with the aid of broad national and international cooperation and networking. We promote regional connectivity and are connected to major European innovation ecosystems. VTT’s Espoo research facilities – Bioruukki the largest bioeconomy pilot and research facility in Nordic countries, Micronova, our world-class cleanroom facility, Mikes the National Metrology Insitute of Finland, our biotechnology and food research piloting environment, engine and vehicle laboratory, and the soon to be opened new nuclear safety research facilities – are an essential part of the Espoo as well as the Finnish research infrastructure.

4. VTT in a key position in enhancing innovation networking

Together with VTT, also the City of Espoo is strongly connected, both within Finland and also throughout EU. Among European research organisations, VTT has brought in the largest amount of EU research funding per researcher. In the 7th Framework Programme FP7, VTT was involved in 474 projects. VTT is key player in several networks and organisations participating in the multi-annual Horizon 2020 programme. In recent years, VTT’s key arenas in Europe have included European Technology Platforms, PPP initiatives, Advisory Groups of H2020, KET High Level Group, European Innovation Partnerships between Member States, as well as EIT ICT Labs and EIT Raw Materials. 

 

5. Examples of recent VTT research and impact

5G: VTT is the coordinator of the 5G Test Network Finland (5GTNF) test environment promoting research and technology development by interconnecting 5G test networks. The test environment will serve as an innovation platform which can be utilized by companies to test new products and business models. Nokia is one of the active partners in the 5G test network projects.

- Bioeconomy/Case Paptic: Paptic Ltd is a VTT spin-off that uses VTT technology that enables the manufacturing of a revolutionary new wood-based fibre product with plastic-like properties. Already 70% of the material used in the PAPTIC Bags is renewable and biodegradable, and it can be recycled. A demo plant was established in the autumn in Espoo.

- Smart City:VTT research covers all the core technology areas relevant to smart city development. The key technologies and application domains are ICT, energy, transport and the built environment. VTT has collaborated with Espoo City, for example, boosting collaborative planning with new visualisation technologies, like mobile augmented reality, and planning energy-efficient resident areas. http://www.vttresearch.com/Documents/impact/VTT_SmartCity.pdf

- Healthcare and wellbeing technologies/Case GE: GE Healthcare set up a digital healthcare programme worth 28.5 M€ in Finland to develop wireless and mobile technologies for patient diagnosis and monitoring. VTT acts as GE’s strategic research partner in the programme.
